Prepare for Hurricane Season 2025
Greetings,
Hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30. Hurricanes can cause storm surge, heavy rainfall, inland flooding, high winds, tornadoes and rip currents. These can cause damage to infrastructure, stopping basic services such as electricity and water. On rare occasions, New Orleans issues a mandatory evacuation order due to the threat of a hurricane. If you have been ordered to evacuate, you should not return until you are told by local officials that it is safe to do so. If an evacuation is not ordered for a hurricane headed to our area, you may still choose to evacuate or, alternatively, shelter in place.
It is important that you prepare now for any potential weather events this hurricane season. We strongly recommend that you do the following:
- Learn how to create a personal evacuation plan, and report your plan to Tulane University
- Read our OISS guide to learn specifically about how to create a plan and take all the necessary precautions
- Please check Tulane's Emergency website for all the latest updates and resources
- Follow OISS on Instagram @oiss.tulane so you can receive any important updates during any office closures. (OISS will also post alerts on the oiss.tulane.edu website.)
- Take all necessary actions to maintain your status, to the extent possible under current circumstances, including keeping necessary documents in a safe and secure place, taking documents with them if ordered to evacuate, and communicating with Tulane about your emergency plans. Review guidance here from Study in the States on maintaining status during emergency events. While the information on the page is geared toward F-1 students, other students and scholars may find the information helpful.
By doing these things, you'll be better prepared for any storms that might come our way this hurricane season. Stay safe!
