Host a Tulanian for Thanksgiving

Join the Office of International Students and Scholars,  the Carolyn Barber-Pierre Center for Intercultural Life, the Office of Family Programs, and the Office of Alumni Relations for the second year of our "Host a Tulanian for Thanksgiving" dinner program! Develop rewarding friendships and create a memorable experience for Tulane students who are unable to travel home for the holiday and international students who would like to experience this unique U.S. tradition.

How to participate in the Thanksgiving Dinner Program:

Sign up online by Wednesday, November 12th at 11:59 PM. Each host family is asked to host at least two students. You will be matched with students, and their contact information will be emailed to you before Wednesday, November 19th.

Host Responsibilities 

  • Meal Preparation: Plan and prepare the Thanksgiving meal. If you are able to accommodate any dietary restrictions or preferences, please list them in the form.
  • Dietary Needs: Check for allergies, dietary restrictions, or medical conditions before the visit.
  • Engage Socially: Make the student feel welcome by including them in conversations, activities, and traditions.
  • Safe Environment: Provide students with a safe environment where they feel included and welcomed.
  • Transportation Safety: Some students may be unable to provide their own transportation. In that case, please assist or advise on safe transportation options to and from the host’s home.
  • Communication & Pre-Visit Coordination: Communicate details with students clearly before the meal (arrival time, pick-up time, directions, etc.).

Guest Responsibilities 

  • Respect Host's Home: Treat the alumni/staff/faculty homes with care and respect. Follow any house rules or guidelines provided by your host.
  • Dietary Needs: Confirm with host for allergies, dietary restrictions, or medical conditions before the visit.
  • Engage Socially: Join conversations with host family members and engage in activities and traditions. Show appreciation and listen attentively Punctuality: Arrive on time for your scheduled visit. If you are running late or need to cancel, notify the host family as soon as possible.
  • Dress Appropriately: Wear neat attire suitable for a family gathering. If you have questions, ask your host.
  • Limit Electronic Device Use: Use phones and other devices sparingly to stay engaged with your host.
  • Transportation Safety: Some students may be unable to provide their own transportation. In that case, please assist or advise on safe transportation options to and from the host’s home.
  • Confidentiality and Privacy: Respect the privacy of your host family. Do not share personal information or photos without permission.
  • Communication Pre-Visit Coordination: Communicate details with host family clearly before the event (arrival time, pick-up time, directions, etc.).
  • No Additional Guests or Visitors: Only students registered for the program may attend the visits unless otherwise approved.
