Join OISS for Coffee & Conversation! This event series is designed to provide you with a relaxed environment to have themed conversations to learn more about New Orleans culture, U.S. culture, and global cultures. Free coffee is provided. All are welcome!

Theme: New Orleans Food & Culture
Date & Time: August 22, 2024 | 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: The Pit in The Hub (Located Below Lake Residence Hall) ** 

The topic this week is New Orleans Food & Culture. New Orleans is famous for a lot of foods, from gumbo to jambalaya. Come learn a bit about New Orleans food and have a discussion on local restaurants. We will also talk about the rich culture of New Orleans and why this city is so unique compared to other U.S. cities.

**For this event, we will not be in The Garage. Instead, you'll find us over in "The Pit" behind the video wall. Look for OISS signs if you are lost! 

Theme: Labor Day

The topic this week is Labor Day! Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States that honors the American labor movement and the works of laborers in the development of the United States. Join us for an interactive activity where we discuss work and careers! 

Theme: American Idioms

This week, we will talk about Idioms! An idiom is a phrase that is common in a language or culture that means something different from how it literally sounds. For example, "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it," does not mean you will literally cross a bridge. Instead, it means, "We'll make that decision when the time comes." Join us to learn about some common American Idioms and share any expressions you may have in your home country!

Join us for a conversation about Football! Football, or as the United States calls it, “soccer," is very different than "American football." Let's discuss some of the differences and learn how each game is played!

Halloween celebrations take place all throughout the month of October. Originally rooted in the ancient Celtic festival Samhain as a holiday where people would wear costumes to ward off ghosts, the celebration has evolved. On Halloween, Americans wear costumes, go trick-or-treating, and carve jack-o-lanterns. Other countries have similar celebrations like Dia de los Muertos, Borgo a Mozzano, and Walpurgis Night. Come have a discussion about U.S. Halloween and other cultures!
