Tulane J-1 Non-Degree, Special Group, and Scholar Health Insurance Plans

All visiting non-degree J-1 students and J-1 scholars who are not employed by Tulane University must purchase and be enrolled in a university-sponsored health insurance plan for the dates of their J-1 program.  Non-degree J-1 students have the option of choosing one of two plans.  Please see the process for choosing a plan and review the two options below. Special group students (students whose program does not include a regular fall or spring semester should consult their program about their insurance requirements.

Non-Degree Student Process for Summer/ Fall 2023

  • Make your choice when your department asks as part of the immigration documentation creation process.
  • You will be enrolled in insurance coverage by Tulane staff. Do not try to set up an account and pay by credit card online.
  • Fees will go on your fee bill.You will pay for the coverage in Gibson Online. (The deadline is usually the month that your classes start.)
  • Your coverage dates will be around your start date until December 31 or May 31, depending on your end date.

J-1 Student in Post Completion Academic Training Process for 2022-2023

  • You will be enrolled in insurance coverage by Tulane staff when you request Academic Training. Do not try to set up an account and pay by credit card online.
  • You must show a receipt of payment in order for your International Student Advisor to process your extension and Academic Training.
  • Your coverage dates will be the dates of your extension.

J-1 Scholar Process

  • Make your choice when OISS asks as part of the immigration documentation creation process.
  • You will be enrolled in insurance coverage by Tulane staff within 6 weeks of the start date of your J-1 program.
  • You will receive instructions for the steps you need to take to complete enrollment and pay for the coverage.
