How did studying abroad affect your academic and/or professional career?

I learned a lot about the differences in the healthcare systems in the U.S. vs Denmark as well as their differences in culture and prevention programs that affect their health status. Through studying abroad in Copenhagen, as well as travelling to other countries, I learned a lot about different European lifestyles and gained a new perspective of the world.

How did you explore your hobbies, interests, and passions abroad?

I lived in the Public Health Learning and Living Community (LLC) which was one of the best decisions I had made. The LLC was less than a 10 minute walk to classes and located in the city center with easy access to a variety of stores, restaurants, activities, and all of the tourist attractions. The LLC also provided me with experiences I wouldn't have been able to have if I lived in another housing option. Some of my favorite activities were going to a Copenhagen sauna, talking with a midwife, and getting my brain scanned by a neurologist.

Why would you recommend your respective abroad program or location?

DIS provides its students with a lot of opportunities to explore their academic interests outside of the classroom through field studies (each class requires two). These are typically field trips to other locations in Denmark that applies to the content of the class. For example, in my Anthropology of Food class we went to a gin distillery and learned about how they produced their gin and of course we were offered a tasting.

What should students consider when applying and preparing for their time abroad?

It is important for prospective students to understand how immersed they want to be in the culture. While DIS provides many opportunities to experience the Danish culture, it is also easy for students to not be involved. Almost everyone in Copenhagen speaks English and DIS is a program exclusive to American students so it is up to the student to decide how much he/she wants to engage with the Danes and be apart of their culture.

Share a story about a time you experienced cultural immersion.

One of the first times I went biking a man hit me on the back of my head because I was going too slow. Danes are aggressive bikers.
